FRESNO SECTIONAL Attendance was down a little from last year. We’re pleased that attendance at the 199er game on Saturday morning keeps improving. Jackie Finn did a great job with hospitality, keeping us from starvation in the short breaks between sessions every day. Thanks go to Belva Quattrin, Deb Petersen, and Anthony Toto whose contribution and efforts helped make it possible. We also thank those who donated to the hospitality fund. Richard Meffley won the President’s Award for winning the most master points at the tournament, while Ann Keag was the top 99er for the second tournament in a row. POKER NIGHT FRIDAY MARCH 1 Come one, come all to our spectacular Poker Night on Friday, March 1 at 6 pm. Prizes go to the top poker players with valuable gift certificates to raffle winners. Advance price of $20 includes pizza dinner, wine, poker chips and lots of fun. If there is enough interest, we’ll have a bridge game on the side. The price at the door is $25. ANNIVERSARY PARTY APRIL 7, 2019 We’re celebrating Fresno Unit’s 75th anniversary and our tenth year at our present location. Come enjoy the lunch and the Charity Championship game for PRO Hospice, which took such good care of Maggie in the last few months. PLACES AND FACES At the Riverside Regional, John and Della Schnell were tenth in one open pairs and twelfth in another. Our sympathy is extended to the family of Barbara Kelley, who recently passed away. CLUB NEWS The Wednesday afternoon game will be co-directed by Laura Da Costa and Mary Lou Pease starting on March 6, 2019. Once a month there will be a contest to win a free game on Wednesday afternoon. It may be a different contest each month, but the winner will still get a free play. They are planning to add a 199er section on Wednesday at noon in a few months – watch the Aces Places and Faces for the starting date. Kay Chrisman is now running the Tuesday afternoon 750 game. Please reply to her e-mails if you plan to attend. Gary Nelson and Richard Meffley were the top masterpoint winners in Madera for February, followed by Barbara Diebert and Virginia Hailey. Steve Johnson leads for 2019, followed by Richard Meffley, Barbara Diebert, and Virginia Hailey. Here are a few simple things you can do to make life easier: Throw away your garbage when you are done with it Take used glasses and dishware to the kitchen when you’re done (place in dishwasher if it has dirty dishes) Greet players when you start a new round After the last round: Take equipment to the tables near the computer Push your chair in close to the table LESSONS Mun Takeda will have two lessons in March. On Thursday March 14 at 6 pm she will discuss 2 over 1 and hand evaluation. On Tuesday March 26 at 10 am she will discuss essential bridge tips plus New Minor Forcing and 1430. Each lesson is $20, with all proceeds to the Fresno Unit, thanks to Mun. The Saturday morning beginning free lessons at 9 am on March 2 will discuss Stayman and No Trump bidding. On Saturday March 9 the lesson will be on Jacoby transfers. Anyone who wants a refresher on those subjects may attend. . | FROM MAGGIE I want to thank all of my good friends for all your love, support, and prayers through the past five months. This is NOT the way I wanted to end my bridge career, but you have to play the hand you are dealt.... Bridge has been a big, big part of my life. I hope Fresno Bridge Club will continue its existence and hope everyone gets as much enjoyment from 'the game' as I have not only as a player but as a teacher too. So continue to bid those slams! Love and hugs to all, Maggie MAGGIE MAHAFFEY DISTRICT 21 GOODWILL MEMBER The Fresno Unit nominated Maggie and District 21 named Maggie as a Goodwill Member for 2009 for her outstanding service since 1970. We wrote that she has been membership chairman for Unit 522 for 38 consecutive years. She keeps a file with all unit members and former members. If we ever needed to know anything about our members, she knew. She has been a club owner and directed Unit games. She ran the novice program at the Fresno Bridge Club. She currently runs two sessions per week – a limited game and an open game. The limited game started as an EasyBridge game in 2000. She assisted Ginny Dow in presenting EasyBridge, and took over the class after the second lesson series. She starts each game with a lesson which is very helpful in bringing in new members and retaining old members. The game now averages over ten tables per session. She has been on the Fresno Unit board of directors for over ten years. She was co-chair of the committee to raise additional funds for the proposed relocation of the Fresno Bridge Club. She acts as de facto clubhouse manager for the unit – she’s the one who checks that the filters are replaced, that the fluorescent lighting and ballasts are in good order. She started the recycling program at the club and brings in additional funds by taking our empty soft drink cans to the recycler. She volunteered her husband and son to fill potholes in the parking lot. And of course, she is the one who puts up and takes down the Christmas tree. She has served as partnership chairman when Fresno has hosted regional tournaments, and also served on the partnership committee at the 1980 Fresno North American Championships. The Fresno Unit honored her many years ago as the recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. We were lucky to have such a dedicated person willing to further bridge and promote bridge games. WANDA CARDELLA We are saddened to announce that one of our favorite players passed away last August. Wanda was one of the best players at the bridge club, attaining the rank of Sapphire Life Master. From 2004 through 2008 she was in the top five for master points won at the Fresno Bridge Club, including her first place in 2006. Unfortunately she stopped playing at the club in 2009 due to illness. She was a gracious partner and opponent. We have missed her. OAKHURST NEWS Wally Wallace Memorial We invite you to attend a memorial for Wilson “Wally” Wallace on Saturday March 2 at 1:00 pm at Whittenberg Hall in Oakhurst, with lunch, and a special game following the memorial service. One Hundred Percent of the entry fees for the game are being given to the Fresno Bridge Center in Wally’s honor in appreciation of their newcomer lessons on Saturday mornings. |
