Volume LXXI No. 11 Phone 559-225-0505 FALL SECTIONAL MARK STERN WINS PRESIDENTS AWARD CHERYL JOHNSON WINS 99er AWARD Former Fresnan Jim Slinger was the top winner at the recent Fall Sectional, winning three events and taking second in another. The President’s Award goes to the top Fresno player, who is Mark Stern. Mark won an event, took second twice, plus a third and a fifth. Cheryl Johnson took a first and a second in the limited events and placed in an open event to win the 99er Award. Congratulations! Thanks to Jackie Finn who chaired the hospitality committee and to Deb Petersen and Belva Quattrin for all their help. Again, Scott Campbell did a great job as Director-in-charge. PLACES AND FACES At the regional in Sparks, Nevada, Steve Johnson and Ed Hampton won the 299er pairs. Richard Meffley took third and sixth in open pairs events. Steve Johnson and Rhonda Hampton won the Gold Rush pairs twice and took fifth another time. Bill Glass won the afternoon Swiss teams and took third in one side game and fourth in another. The Nugget in Sparks is a nice hotel for the tournament. The weekday hotel rates are low. There are many restaurants at the hotel and nearby. For those who like early games, all the main events are at 10 am and 3 pm. Welcome to new member William Fullar of Coarsegold. Congratulations to new Silver Life Master Jacqui McGreal. Congratulations to new NABC master Steve Johnson, new club master Helen Smades, and new junior master Lynda Moller. We are saddened to learn that Walt Kelso and Paul Boyd passed away in the last week. Both were outstanding gentlemen. Paul was a Life Master who played frequently in our afternoon games. Walt was a more recent addition to our club, and was one of the top players in our 99er games. We’ll miss them both. Our condolences go to their families. CHRISTMAS PARTY, ANNUAL MEETING and ELECTION December 8 Please come to our annual meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 8. Christmas Dinner will be at noon, with a Unit Championship bridge game at 1 pm. Some time in between will be the Annual Meeting and Unit Board Election. It is not too late to run for election to the unit board. The Unit rents the Bridge Center and holds some weekly games and sub-rents the Bridge Center to club owners who run bridge games. The Unit is also responsible for holding sectional tournaments and promoting bridge as best it can. If you would like to be on the board and help with these activities, contact Nominations Chairman Steve Johnson or any board member so you’ll be on the election ballot. A new free bridge lesson series will begin in mid-January, 2020. MUN’S LESSONS There’s more to learn about defensive signals. Mun Takeda will teach Part 2 of Defensive Signals on November 13 at 10 am and November 14 at 6:30 pm. Defense can be the hardest part of the game.
