GRADUATION PARTY PRO-AM PAIRS June 25 Our annual graduation party is Sunday, June 25, 2017 where we honor our new Life Masters and a few others. So far, our new LMs are John and Peggy Oakshott, who made it at the Modesto regional last fall. As our honored guests, they play free. Following the Pot Luck graduation party, we have our annual Pro-Am pairs. As much as possible, Life Masters draw to play with nonLMs. It’s a lot of fun to be a little bit of a mentor, and fun to play with a LM if you don’t very often. We’ll all have fun and remember to avoid giving unsolicited advice, and be very nice if you do. Please remember to bring a favorite dish – dessert, salad, or main course, so we can all enjoy the afternoon. PLACES and FACES Jay Roll and his partner Judy Callahan were the top master point winners at the Modesto Sectional. They were first in on open pairs game and second in another. There were so many winners at the Visalia sectional that they are all listed in the Winners Circle. Gerard Laquerriere is now a Diamond Life Master; Ray April is a Gold Life Master, and Mary Lou Pease is a Bronze Life Master. Ruby Butterweck, Brenda Ward and Rita Gladding are now Club masters. Congratulations to all those with rank changes. Welcome to new members John Cadwalader, Roylene Hamilton, Ladonna Goss, Ed Hampton, Bob Hampton, Faith Nitschke, Tanya Weston, and Juan Sobenes. Our sympathy is extended to the family of Julie Boucher, who recently passed away. She played for many years in club games and tournaments, but she has been unable to visit the bridge club for several years. Our sympathy goes to the family of Ellie Withee, who passed away in May. She played often in the Oakhurst games. Our sympathy also goes to Avis Morse, whose husband Brian recently passed away. Our condolences go to the family of Ron Vieira, who recently passed away. We are saddened to hear that Marian Steinmetz passed away last October. She and her husband Bob played regularly at the club until Bob passed away and Marian moved to Capitola. One of my favorite memories is playing with her, Bob, and Steve Sharp over thirty years ago in our annual team game. In those days we picked for teams and had a Sunday Swiss team game with over thirty teams. We qualified sixteen teams to play knockout matches at the club or at player’s homes. In the final match at the Steinmetz’s home, we were behind by almost 50 IMPs at the halfway point, but we all played our best in the last half to eke out a victory. LESSONS Beginning bridge lessons will start again on Saturday July 22, If you have friends or relatives or neighbors who might want to learn, please let them know. VISALIA SECTIONAL FRIDAY MORNING

I thought hard copies of our monthly profit and loss statements were being posted at the center, but I was wrong. Rather than provide months of data sheets, a treasurer’s report and a summary of the last few quarters is posted at the center and is available on our website. The board of directors is taking steps to bring our expenses in line with our income and we hope to have good news for you soon. Don Austin, treasurer (Click on green "Treasurer's" to read report.) CLUB NEWS NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS – June, July, August The NAP club qualifying is in June, July, and August. Qualifiers can win red points. There are three flights: Open, under 2,500 master points, and NLM under 500 points. Games are stratified at the club and unit level. There are separate events at the district and national level. Those who qualify are eligible to play in the Unit finals in November. If you’re in the top half in November, you can play in the District 21 finals in January. The top three there can play in the finals in Philadelphia next March. Watch the calendar to see when the NAP games are scheduled.
