Volume LXIX Number 4 8th ANNIVERSARY PARTY APRIL 9, 2017 March for Babies Our eighth anniversary party to celebrate our “new” location is Sunday, April 9. We’ll provide lunch about noon before the game. Ask your favorite partner to come and play with you. This is a charity game for the March of Dimes – March for Babies. We’re planning on two sections – an open section and a 499er section – for those with under 500 master points. Mary Lou Pease will participate in the March for Babies on Saturday, April 29. You can join her team and contribute to the March for Babies at www.Marchforbabies.org/mlpease. For every dollar raised, 75 cents is used in Fresno County. PLACES AND FACES Farid Assemi was third in the bracketed Swiss teams at the Saratoga sectional. Richard Meffley was 21st in the Levintritt Silver Ribbon pairs at the NABC tournament in Kansas City. Our Saturday morning lessons are doing well. So far we have ten new members. Welcome to new members Ed Hampton, Faith Nitschke, and Tanya West. Congratulations to our new junior master, Catherine Wilkins. Our sympathy goes to Judy Dodd, whose mother recently passed away. Also to Richard Meffley, whose mother passed away last Thursday. Get well wishes go to Karen Matthews. LESSONS We’re starting new lesson series on Saturday, April 22, at 9 am. EasyBridge 1 is for new players; EasyBridge 2 is a continuation for those who took EasyBridge 1. Please tell your friends and neighbors, because both series are free and last about eleven weeks. There will be no lessons April 8 or April 15. Try out your skills in the 99er game at noon every Saturday. Call Mary Lou at 288-2340 or Laura at 999-2825 for news about lessons. STRATS You may wonder why sometimes you’re in one stratification and sometimes another. Sometimes Flight B, sometimes Flight C. At tournaments, with larger events than we have at club games, they announce in the flyers how many master points you need for each flight, and they are required to follow the announcement. At our smaller club games, it’s a moving target. Directors try to make each strat have players with similar numbers of master points. We try to have about half the players in strat C and the rest in strat A or B. However, for Championship games, all strats must have at least five pairs in order to give an overall award. We try to put five pairs in flight C. Flight B awards go to players in Flight B or C. Flight A awards go to all players, regardless of which flight they are in. If there are fewer than five pairs in strat C, the C strat gives section points, but not the higher overall awards. Note: I’ve used “flight” and “strat” interchangeably to mean “strat.” | PEGGY OCHS MEMORIAL GAME May 7 Sunday May 7 we have our annual put luck lunch and Peggy Ochs Memorial for our members who passed away during the last year. For those who don’t remember, Peggy was one of three directors who ran bridge clubs at three different locations over 50 years ago, before the Unit helped them move to our club on Clinton Avenue around 1964. She continued to run several sessions a week and frequently gave lessons at Weinstock’s. Please get a partner for that date, and plan to bring something delicious for the pot luck. We really like our bridge center, but the rent is getting to be more than we can afford. The rent has gone up, and our members playing has gone down in the last few years. Our board is diligently checking options so that we’ll stay in good financial status. In 2016, our attendance was down several hundred tables from 2015. This year we are up about forty tables from last year. Thanks to Jay Shapiro, who is taking over the Tuesday morning game after the unit board decided to close it. Come join him on Tuesday morning. If you are 90 or over, you can play free on Tuesday morning. STORY A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember .. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks. 'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.' 'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks. 'No, I can remember it.' 'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?' He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.' 'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks. Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!' Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment. 'Where's my toast?' |
