Volume LXIX No.3 FRESNO WINTER SECTIONAL Jay Roll wins President’s Award Kathryn Miller wins 99er Award Jay Roll won two events and finished second twice to win the most master points and the President’s Award. Kathryn Miller won the Monday morning 499er pairs, and took two second places, a third and a fifth to win the 99er Award. Congratulations! We had one of our best sectionals in several years. Attendance for the winter sectional hasn’t been this high since 2011. We had guests from Pacific Grove, Visalia, Tulare, Bethel Island, San Francisco, San Jose, and Dublin Ohio. Thanks go to our hospitality chairman Jackie Finn, who had much help from Belva Quattrin and all who brought refreshments. Thanks also to Anthony Toto. Also thank you to tournament director Diane Barton-Payne and chairman Laura Da Costa, who never stopped working for the tournament. Don’t forget we have two more sectionals this year – the NonLM sectional August 12-13 and our Fall sectional October 20 through 22. PLACES and FACES At the San Luis Obispo sectional , Gerard Laquerriere and Paul Schommer won the Saturday afternoon pairs and were second in the morning pairs, sixth in the Friday pairs, and second in the Swiss teams with Mun Takeda and Allyson Farrell. They were also top master point winners at the tournament. Jay Roll and Richard Meffley were eight in the open pairs at the Los Angeles Regional. At the San Mateo sectional, Farid Assemi and Richard Meffley were tenth in the open pairs. Howard Arquette is a new Ruby Life Master. Burke Zane is now a Silver Life Master. Cathleen Burden and Denny Tweed made Regional master. Barbara Brock is now a Sectional master. Fred Schellack is now a Junior master. Congratulations! Welcome to new members Joan Clark, Alan Sakamoto, and Margot Cegielski. We neglected to acknowledge the memory of Sol Kaufman, who passed away in February of 2016 at the age of 102. Our condolences go to his daughter Carol. He and his wife May were regular players at the Fresno Bridge Club. We’re glad to see Dick Powell back in action at the bridge club. | 8th ANNIVERSARY PARTY Come join us for our party on Sunday, April 9, 2017 to celebrate the eighth anniversary of our moving into the Fresno Bridge Center from our former club on Clinton Avenue. Our first game here was April 19, 2009. We’ll have more information about the party later. The party will be a charity game, so be sure to bring an extra dollar to donate, more if you wish. Mary Lou Pease will be doing the March for Babies again. ACCOUNTANT NEEDED A big thank you goes to John Renna, who has filed our tax returns ever since we incorporated and started filing tax returns. John recently retired and will no longer prepare our tax returns. We are looking for a volunteer to prepare the 2016 tax returns, due May 15 (or later if we file an extension). CLUB NEWS Oakhurst winners for February are Clair Molnar, Ken Doig, Karen McCartin, Al Ellis, and Burke Zane. February winners in Madera are led by Gary Nelson and Richard Meffley, followed by Larry and Gay Slates. These four lead for 2017, followed by Carol Kaufman and Barbara Diebert. We will celebrate the Ides of March (March 15) in Madera by not having a game. The 99er game at noon on Saturday is starting to pick up. If you have less than 100 master points, call Kay at 449-0966 about the game. Lessons at 9 am Saturday are still free. You can join any time if you need a refresher. The top winners at the Fresno Bridge Center for January were Ray April, followed by Steve Sharp, Victor Greener, and Maggie Mahaffey. Top 99ers were Beverly Little, followed by Barbara Brock, Debbie Kemp, and Mary Jane Nevins. The February winners are posted on the unit website. Mark Stern leads for February, with Ann Keag leading the 99ers. Ray April leads for 2017; Beverly Little leads for the 2017 99ers. ZERO TOLERANCE Zero tolerance is always in effect. Please call the director if anyone is rude. Remember what director Scott Campbell always says: “Smiles on, cell phones off.” |
