FALL SECTIONAL
OCTOBER 15-18
A long weekend of tournament bridge with silver points awaits us this month. The schedule has open games and 499er games nearly every day at 10 am and 3 pm. The exceptions are Sunday, with two session open and 49 9er team games starting at 10 am  (lunch included) and Saturday at 10 am, which features a 199er game with newcomers (0-10 master points) free.
If you need help finding a partner, let Mary Lou Pease know (288-2340 or marylou121@comcast.net). She can help.
We can always use help with hospitality. Sign up at the Bridge Center to bring something good to eat for one of the sessions. If you can’t make it to the Bridge Center to sign up, you can bring something anyway. We’ve seen great hospitality at sectionals in Visalia, Bakersfield, and Gilroy. We don’t want them to think they are better hosts than we are.

CHARITY AWARD
Each year District 21 gives a total of $5,000 to charities nominated by the units of District 21. This year we nominated CASA, court appointed special advocates for children. We are pleased that CASA will receive $1,000 from District 21.
Speaking of CASA, our members do a lot of other things besides play bridge. Mona Omar was recently honored as CASA’s Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations.

PLACES AND FACES
Jay Roll was third in the open pairs and tenth in another open pairs at the Irvine Regional. Bill Glass was fourth in one side game and fifth in another. Farid Assemi and Richard Meffley were second in the Gilroy sectional open pairs.
At the All Western Regional in Santa Clara, Bill and Jill Wood were fifth in the charity pairs and tenth in flight B in the daylight pairs. Pete Weber was first in flight C in the daylight pairs and third in flight C in another daylight pairs. Patrick Carroll and John McGregor were second in flight C in the daylight pairs (which was also good for 14th in flight A). Mun Takeda and Allyson Farrell were third in the bracketed 0-2000 pairs. Farid Assemi and Richard Meffley won the All Western pairs.
Congratulations to all our winners!
Martha Waller is now a Regional Master. Helen Smades is a Junior Master. Congratulations on your advances in rank.

Our condolences go the family of Renee Schwartz.  She and her husband were long time members, but they have not  played for several years.

NAP

UNIT BOARD ELECTION

CLUB NEWS
JANE JOHNSON
CLUB APPRECIATION MONTH
All clubs can have a club appreciation championship game this month. The games are named after Jane Johnson, former chairman of the ACBL club membership department. These are special championship rated games held every year in October. There is no extra fee – we’re giving extra master points because we appreciate our club players.
Clubs may also hold a club appreciation team game, which pays 5% gold points. If you need a fraction of a gold point, this could do it. One game is scheduled for Saturday, October 31.
Oakhurst winners for September were Claire Molnar, Ken Doig, Clem Bingham, Y. Srinivasan, Jim Luther, and Karen McCartin. Ray April was the top Fresno bridge player for August, far ahead of second and third place David Ash and Bob Durbrow. Ray still leads for 2015, followed by Mark Stern, Steve Sharp, David Ash, and Skip Miller. Larry and Gay were the top players in Madera for September, followed by Gary Nelson. Gary leads for 2015, followed by Richard Meffley, Carol Kaufman, and Larry and Gay Slates.  Don and Marion Austin were the top 99ers for August, followed by Don and Doris Myers. Don Myers leads for 2015, followed by Marge Field, Doris Myers, and Don and Marion Austin. September results will be posted on the website the first weekend of October.

  EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
There are a few things that everyone who plays bridge should learn. If you don’t know them, learn one every month or two. Don’t try to take on a lot of new things at once.

  1. Leading an Ace is often a bad idea; leading an Ace or King when you have both in a suit is often a good idea.

  2. Before the opening lead, don’t ask yourself, “What should I lead?” Ask yourself “Why not lead my partner’s suit?”

  3. Attitude signals – how to let your partner know whether you like a suit.

  4. Jacoby replies to 1NT and 2NT
    Follow-ups

  5. How do I ask for Aces?

  6. What do I do when partner opens a weak two bid?

  7. Stayman
How to answer Stayman with 4-4 in majors
What to do with 5-4 in majors
Can I use Stayman with really bad hands?

  8. What my bid means when the opponent opens 1 NT. (Is it Hamilton or Landy or DONT or natural or something else?)

  9. What hand is good enough to open in third seat?

  10. Drury (or actually Reverse Fit Drury). Bidding after partner opens in third seat.

  11. Splinter Bids

  12. Negative Doubles

  13. Unusual No Trump

  14. Michaels over minors

  15. Michaels over majors

  16. What does 3C, 3D, 3H, 3S mean after partner opens 1 NT?

  17. Other cue bids

  18. If 2NT response to 1NT does not show about 8-9 points, you must make lots of changes.
