LONGEST DAY
June 22, 2018
The Longest Day is a fund raiser for the Alzheimer’s Foundation. We’ll have five games from dawn to night, all day Friday June 22.You can play as many as you wish. There is an individual game at 6 am, and pair games at 9:00, 12:30, 4:30, and 6:45. The 4:30 game will be Fast Pairs – a fun game that requires players to play each hand a couple of minutes faster than usual. A 299er game and an open game are scheduled for 12:30. You can donate for the Fresno Unit by looking up
Alzheimer’s longest day on line, clicking on FIND, and typing 522.  Or you can go to our webpage or Facebook page and click on the link. You can also donate a check or cash at the bridge club. The price for the game is the same as usual club games, so please make a donation. Last year we raised $2,501. Let’s see if we can beat our record.

Treasurer’s report for June 2018
THREE T-SHIRTS for contributions to Alzheimer’s research. More about that below.
The last treasurer’s report was not approved by the board because of a quirk related to the budget process we are re-establishing. The actual financial reporting is accurate and was not an issue when reviewed by the board. However, when we set up a budget for this current year, it involved using last year games and directors. Two directors who had games last year are not directing games this year. One moved away and one passed away. Those games were taken over by other directors, but I failed to make the necessary corrections in the software, so the budget, not the actual, had issues. Look for that to be fixed. To summarize, we are in the same financial shape as before, not great, but not bad.
Let me take this opportunity to mention you can make a tax-deductible contribution to support research for Alzheimer’s Disease at the club. I am involved because it touched me. My mother suffered from this affliction.
I learned how to play bridge by playing at the dining room table with her and my father. She taught me about opening 1NT. She and my father were members of a rubber bridge club that met once a month. Although heavily involved in the community, their time playing bridge the apex of their social life.
My brothers and I saw her issues with short term memory as she got older. She got to the point she could not play bridge, which devastated my father. It was more than fifteen years from the time she began to show memory issues until she died. It was a long and dragged out goodbye.
Alzheimer’s Disease touched me. I will be playing from dawn until dusk on June 22, along with my son, my mother’s grandson. If you can’t play an extra game, donate in the box at the center. The top three contributions will be given a T-Shirt.
