Volume LXXI No. 4 10th and 75th ANNIVERSARY April 7, 2019 This year is a jubilee year - the 75th year of the Fresno Unit and the tenth year in our new home. We’re celebrating with a barbecue and a charity game for Pro-Hospice, which took such care of Maggie Mahaffey in her last months. There will be an open section and a 299er section. Come celebrate! LESSONS Mun Takeda will teach about reopening the bidding and reverse Drury on Tuesday April 9 at 10 am and Thursday April 11 at 6 pm. Drury was invented by Doug Drury because his partner Eric Murray opened so light in third seat. Drury will help you stay low if your partner likes to open light in third position. Reopening is always tough when you’re the last to bid and you can pass and end the auction or bid and keep it going. Mun has some clues for you. Beginning lessons start again on Saturday May 4. Tell your friends about the free lessons. Call Mary Lou 288-2340 or Laura 999-2825 for more information. CLUB NEWS The top players in Madera for March were Steve Johnson and Gay and Larry Slates. Tops for 2019 are Steve Johnson, Richard Meffley, Barbara Diebert and Carol Kaufman. The top players at the Fresno Bridge Center for February were Richard Meffley, Steve Johnson, Mark Stern and Ray April. Richard Meffley leads for 2019, followed by Bill Glass, Steve Johnson, and Mark Stern. Pam Pigg, Ann Keag, and Mary Claire Ewing are the top 99ers for February. Pam, Ann, and Cheryl Johnson lead the 99ers for 2019. Treasurer’s report At the end of February, we were in the black by a couple of hundred dollars. Don’t be excited by that, we were in the red by about $1000 in January, but with the sectional in February we were ahead. Specifics can be found on the financial reports posted at the bridge center. March looks good, with a poker night fund raiser and several of Mun’s lessons providing us with income to cover the usual $1000 loss. It is typical that we lose $1000 per month based on just normal play. If a few pairs play an extra game a month, we could reduce that. The most exciting financial news is that we received a small reward from ACBL for having registered new players. That $10.00 is in the bank, but let’s hope this is the start of new growth. Tell your friends that fun can be had at the Fresno Bridge Center.Marion and I played at the Visalia anniversary event and everyone was nice. When we changed tables, the hosts welcomed us to play. We in Fresno have a reputation of having some players who are not nice. Please fix that. Either say something nice or keep quiet. No stupid jokes you think are cute, please. Quiet is better than driving off players.
