Volume LXIX Number 8 FRESNO NON-LM SECTIONAL August 12-13, 2017 If you’re not a Life Master and have less than 500 master points, you’re invited to our sixteenth annual NonLM Sectional. All points you win are silver points. You can choose to play any or all of four sessions – at 10 am and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Jackie Finn will organize lunch in between sessions – we’ll have a lesson during lunch each day. There is a sign-up sheet at the Bridge Center for hospitality – you can bring something for the hospitality table. Be sure to get your partner for the tournament. If you don’t have a partner, check in with Partnership Chair Mary Lou Peace at 559-288-2340 or Marylou121@comcast.net. PLACES and FACES At the Long Beach Regional, Bill Glass was seventh in the Pro-Am pairs, and second twice in the side game. Jay Roll was sixth in the open pairs. Richard Meffley was 43rd in the Wernher open pairs at the Toronto NABC. Congratulations to those receiving rank changes. Mary Claire Ewing is now a Club master. Barbara Gaudin and Susan Snyder are now Junior masters. Welcome to new member Jung Kim. Our condolences go to the family of Ron Vieira, who passed away May 5. TREASURER’S REPORT There has been no change in the club's finances. We are still working on a long term fix for our financial situation. As soon as there is something to report, it will be announced. NABC SAN DIEGO November 24 – December 3 The North American Bridge Championships (NABC) are visiting California again this year, with a few events on Thanksgiving and many more starting the next day. The NABC has events for everyone – from international champions to 99ers and beginners. There are speakers every day to help you learn. Corey Cole has informed me that the Omni hotel is a 4 star hotel about a 10 minute walk from the tournament. A group rate is available for $129 before taxes, compared to $149 at the host hotel. Corey has stayed there a few times during the regionals; I stayed at the Omni in 2009 for the NABC. Please see the attachment . You can call the hotel after August 6 to make reservations. . We’re starting a new lesson series on Saturday, September 16, at 9 am. EasyBridge 1 is for new players; EasyBridge 2 is a continuation for those who took EasyBridge 1. If you have barely played or never played bridge, Easybridge 1 is for you. Please tell your relatives, friends, and neighbors who you think might enjoy playing our exciting game. Call Mary Lou at 288-2340 or Laura at 999-2825. NO MORE STOP CARD The ACBL board of directors passed a rule effective in January. The STOP card and the “Please Wait” announcement are no longer to be used. Still, if someone jumps the bidding, the next player must wait about 10 seconds before bidding. Use of the STOP card has never been required – it has always been optional. So, you can stop using it now if you wish. It’s being eliminated because of the confusion and misuse it causes. The Stop card is for the benefit of the opponents, not for the benefit of partner. CAKE At our last pot luck lunch, Carol Miller brought a wonderful flourless chocolate cake. No gluton! It was rich and delicious. If you want the recipe, it’s on the internet at http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/flourless-chocolate-torte-recipe-2121190?soc=sharemail CLUB NEWS Final month NAP This is the last month to qualify for the North American Pairs.
