Volume LXXI No. 8 NonLM SECTIONAL August 10-11 Our 18th annual Non-Life Master sectional is coming up this weekend. We’ll have pair games at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday, a pair game on Saturday at 2:30 pm, and Swiss teams on Sunday at 2:30 pm, plus a 99er game Saturday morning. Mary Lou Pease (288-2340) can help you get a partner for the pair games or teammates for the team game on Sunday. All players must have less than 500 master points as of the August Bulletin. Players with 10 or fewer points can play free on Saturday morning. We’ll serve lunch between sessions with a lesson about 1:30 each day. For open players, the regular Saturday club game will still be held at noon. PLACES and FACES At the Las Vegas NABC, Kim Morris and former Fresnans Vivian and Richard Betcher were second in bracket 2 of the Bracketed Swiss teams. Richard Betcher and Kim Morris were 17th in flight B of the open pairs. Farid Assemi and former Fresnans Steve McConnell and Bob Giragosian were 33rd in the Truscott Senior Swiss teams. Rick Whitworth was fifth in the Truscott Senior teams and 44th with former Fresnan Jim Tritt in the Roth Swiss teams. At the Palo Alto sectional, Farid Assemi was third with former Fresnan Jim Slinger in the Knockout teams and the Compact Knockout teams. At the Long Beach regional, Anthony Toto, Bill Glass, and Steve Johnson were third in bracket 2 of the Compact Knockout teams. Anthony Toto was second in Flight C of the Fast pairs.. Gerard Laquerriere was the top player for July on BBO (Bridge Base Online), winning 160 masterpoints. WEAK TWO BIDS The Basic+ Convention chart allows weak two bids with 3 or more high card points and a range of no more than 8 points. A natural two level opening bid is defined as having five or more cards. You should enter your agreed range on your convention card and observe it when you bid. It’s okay to play some odd range such as 8 to 14 so long as you enter it on your card. It’s generally a bad idea to open a weak two with four cards in another major, but it is not against the rules. It’s nice to have a fairly good suit, but that’s not required either. You may miss a game and get a poor score, but the rules allow that. SWISS TEAMS We’ll have a Swiss team game on Sunday afternoon at the nonlife Master sectional. If you haven’t played Swiss teams before, it’s fairly simple. Each team has two members sitting East-West at one table, and two members playing North-South at another table, playing against another team of four. They play the same boards at each table, and then compare results. Play is the same as you’re used to. One main difference is that the game bonus is so big that it pays to bid games if there is a fair chance that you’ll make it. You should also be careful that you don’t make bad vulnerable overcalls, since getting doubled could be costly. Another thing to remember is that you must shuffle the boards before each round. DO NOT shuffle the boards with your teammates. Shuffle the boards with your opponents at the table. When you buy your entry, it will have your team number and your home table for the first round. Usually you play against another team with the same table number in a different section. North-South play at your home table. For example, if your home table is A2, your East-West pair may play at table B2. Wait until the East-West pairs go to the other table before you shuffle and play. For each succeeding round, a chart will show your new home table. North-South will play there and East-West normally plays at the same number table in the corresponding section. If there are an odd number of teams, there will be a different team movement. | LESSONS A new series of free beginning lessons will start on Saturday, September 7 at 9 am. We’ll have Easybridge 1 for those who haven’t had lessons and Easybridge 2 for those with some experience. Lessons continue until just before Thanksgiving. Be sure to let your friends know when beginning bridge starts up again. Call Mary Lou Peace or Laura Da Costa (999-2825) for more information. REACH The Regional Event at Club House was a big success. At least 20 players won masterpoints, and at least six won gold points. ACBL sent e-mails to everyone who played, thanking them and telling them how many points they won. Our club games were happy, since all games reported increased attendance for the week. CLUB NEWS The Tuesday and Thursday games are changing starting times to 12:30 pm, effective for August. Don’t be late! Steve Johnson and Carol Kaufman were the top winners in Madera for July. Steve leads for 2019 followed by Carol, Barbara Diebert, and Gary Nelson Lowell Gist was the top masterpoint winner at the Fresno Bridge Center for July, followed by Laura Da Costa, Mark Stern, and Don and Marion Austin. Victor Greener is the new leader for 2019, followed by Bill Glass and Ray April. Ann Keag is the 99er leader for July, followed by Sandra White and Walt Kelso. Ann leads for 2019, followed by Fred Schellack and Pam Pigg. Don’t forget – even though there’s a non Life Master sectional on August 10 and 11, open players can still play at the club on Saturday at noon. Help the players and directors. If you’re a bit behind, you must pass the boards you’ve played even though you aren’t finished with the last board. For Mitchell movements and Howell movements of five or more tables, always take the boards to the next lower table (except for Table 1). Three and four table Howell movements are different. If the boards haven’t been passed to you when it’s time to play, you may ask for a board. Treasurer’s report For the second month, there are no official reports to post, due to the fact that the board took a vacation from meeting in July. However, I can report informally that the treasurer team (Marion and myself) ran the reports and the club is chugging along at the same financial rate as usual, we lost a little money, but nothing drastic. Besides the board taking a vacation, I suppose plenty club members have been vacationing too, as seen by a slight drop in the size of some games which results in a slight drop of income. Maybe next month we will see a few extra seats due to the REACH games and the NLM should bring things even again. To fill in about the finances, we have finished the transfer to our new bank and are using a new corporate credit card, which has greatly reduced the burden on the treasurer’s team. I want to thank the directors for the outstanding job they are doing in making the monthly deposits. Their adapting to the easy new system makes it much easier for us to generate the monthly reports and thereby have a better handle on the financial situation. I hope you noticed that we now have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) installed at the club. Not to be confused with or used on those with internal defibrillators. Considering the age of our membership, installing one is the right thing to do. We paid for it from the Memorial Fund. Using it is simple. It consists of a main unit for heart monitoring and defibrillation if necessary, and a small bag with CPR supplies. Once the button is pushed, recorded messages step the user through what to do with the patient. But please don’t push the button for fun. There are some expendable items that have to be replaced each time it is used; well worth the cost if it is needed; but too expensive for a lark. It is so simple, the basic training video is about four (4) minutes long and the directors have all watched it. You can watch it by clicking this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V99-R12iCS4&t=8s or you can do an on-line search for Philips HeartStart OnSite AED. If you have any questions about our finances, please ask me. Look for the next fun fund raisers. Play Nice. Encourage new members. Have fun. |
