Volume LXXI No. 9 FALL SECTIONAL October 4-6 Once again we’re hosting our fall sectional for three days, Friday October 4 through Sunday October 6. We’ve invited popular tournament director Scott Campbell of southern California to be in charge. We’ll have open pairs at 10 am and 2 pm on Friday and Saturday, with 499er pairs opposite them each session except Saturday afternoon, when we’ll have 199er pairs instead. Sunday is reserved for two session Swiss teams, starting at 10 am. The schedule includes open teams and 499er teams. Ask your favorite partner to play now before someone else asks. If you need a partner, call Mary Lou Pease at 288-2340 (or email marylou121@comcast.net). POKER NIGHT Friday, October 25 Our poker nights have been so much fun that we are aiming to have two per year. We’ll be selling raffle tickets for some nice prizes soon in conjunction with Poker Night. Poker Night is a tournament – Pay $20 for some chips. If you lose your chips early, you can buy more. We keep playing until one player wins all the chips. CLUB NEWS Be prepared for lots of master point next month. Each club can have two Club Appreciation games in October – pairs or teams. The team games pay 5% gold points. If a club doesn’t want a team game, it can have two pair Club Appreciation games. There is no extra charge for a Club Appreciation game. The top player in Madera for August was Mary Gullo, followed by Steve Johnson and Carol Kaufman. Steve Johnson leads for2019, followed by Carol Kaufman, Barbara Diebert, and Gary Nelson. Unfortunately, with the daily use fee in Oakhurst increasing on September 1, it is necessary to raise our card fee to $7. If this increase affects your ability to play, please let the director know and we will continue to welcome you at the old rate. We still don’t seem to know how to handle the boards when the round is over. For all games of five or more tables, the finished boards generally go to the next lower table. For example, the boards at table 4 go to table 3. It is the North-South responsibility to move the boards. East-West can do it if the North-South pair fails its duty. If you aren’t finished when the round is called, your duty is to move the played boards by the time the round is called. If the players at the next table ask for boards, do not be rude and ignore them. Pass the boards. For three and four table games, the movement is different, so check with your director. If you haven’t seen the video with instructions for the defibrillator, you can watch it by clicking this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V99-R12iCS4&t=8s or you can do an on-line search for Philips HeartStart OnSite AED. NonLIFE MASTER SECTIONAL Attendance at our recent NLM sectional was about the same as last year. Steve Johnson was the top master point winner, followed by Ann Keag and Diane McDonough. Thanks to Jackie Finn who prepared lunches and other tasty items, and to our members who donated for hospitality. Laura Da Costa and Mary Lou Pease will teach EasyBridge 1 for new and nearly new bridge players. EasyBridge 2 is for those who have taken EasyBridge 1 or had some more experience. Both lesson series are free. Please.tell any of your friends who may have an interest in bridge. Call Mary Lou at 288-2340 or Laura at 999-2825 for additional information. MUN’S LESSONS Mun Takeda will again have lessons for experienced players this month. September lessons are about defensive signals. There are three main kinds of signals. Attitude signals tell your partner whether you like what was played. Count signals tell your partner how many cards you have so partner can figure out what to do. Suit preference signals tell your partner which suit you want led. Mun will tell you when and how to use each kind of signal. Lessons are Tuesday September 17 from 10 am to noon or Thursday September 19 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Thanks to Mun for donating her time to prepare and teach these lessons. Treasurer’s report Financial statements were approved and are available at the center. To summarize them, we lost money in June and July, which is no surprise. Regular summer games are usually down because of vacations, we didn’t have any fund raisers or tournaments these months and we had some special expenses (such as the AED) on the books. While funding the AED was from a special fund, the money still came out of the checkbook, so to speak. And we had to replace decks of cards. All of this is the cost of doing business coming in during a slow period. Not to worry, we have reserves to cover it. And when the August books are done, we will show a little extra from the NLM tournament. Looking forward, Mun is doing an advanced lesson in September. Please thank her for returning the fees back to the club. There will be a Poker Night in October and maybe more lessons. There may be some encouraging news from the new player/lessons side; new beginning players. And there will be more fund raisers in the remaining months of the year. Play an extra game each month. Besides maybe earning some masterpoints, you will be helping our club, Unit 522. Be nice to new players and most importantly: have fun. PLACES and FACES At the Scottsdale Regional, former Fresnans John and Della Schnell were ninth in the open pairs. John was also fifth in another open pairs. Former Maderans John and Pat Simpson were fourth in the side game. Congratulations to new Bronze Life Master Patrick Carroll and new regional masters Debbie Kemp and Jason McAlexander. Also congratulations to new sectional masters Margo Cegielski, Walt Kelso, and Sandra White. Get well wishes go to Suzanne Sobenes. Also to Ed Grootendorst, who is recovering from surgery. 750 REACH GAMES Patricia Creede - Mary Claire Ewing Kathryn Miller - Barbara Wiedel Larry Miller - Sydney Bluestone Rhonda Hampton - Rosalie Jorgensen Jerry F.
