FALL SECTIONAL
JAY ROLL WINS PRESIDENT’S AWARD
ROGER MOON WINS 99er AWARD
Jay Roll was the top master point winner at the Fresno Winter Sectional, winning three events plus placing second and third in other events to take 26.11 master points. Ray April was second, with almost twenty master points.
Jackie Haugen of Arizona was the top 99er, but the 99er award goes to Roger Moon. Roger tied with his partner, Jeff Nevins of Visalia, but the award always goes to a Fresno unit member.

Representatives from CASA of Fresno came to the sectional to accept the District 21 charity award and to tell us what they do for children.

Attendance was lower than previous tournaments. We welcome your comments about how we can make the tournament better. Just put your comments in the nominating box at the Bridge Center, or tell one of our board members. We are grateful to those who always help out, including hospitality chair Jackie Finn, tournament chair Laura Da Costa, and those who always bring refreshments to our tournaments.

We have heard comments that we should be doing more for our players, not just at the tournament, but other times, too. We provide a nice playing area, paid for mainly from your card fees. Our club owners provide an array of snacks at nearly every session. If there is something more that should be done on a regular basis, please let us know. We always want our players to enjoy their bridge game.

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS
Those 95 players who qualified in club games in June, July, or August are eligible to play in the Fresno unit finals at 1 pm on Sunday November 8, 2015. If you are qualified in any flight, you may play with another qualifier and possibly win red points and an invitation to the District 21 finals early next year. Just check to see who else is qualified and get a partner.

PLACES AND FACES
At the recent Ventura Regional, Jay Roll won the Swiss teams, finished third twice, and fifth and sixth in other events. Jim Tritt was first and fourth in open pairs championships.
At the Santa Cruz sectional, Denny Tweed and Cathleen Burden were fifth in the I/N pairs.
Welcome to new members Maryclaire Ewing and Marva White.
Congratulations to new club master Jim H. Luther.
Get well wishes go to Mary Lloyd.
We are glad to see Gary Nelson up and around after a motorcycle accident that kept him in a wheelchair for several weeks.
Our condolences go to  Joyce Kauder,  whose former mother-in-law Mary Jane Farell recently passed away. Mary Jane was a member of the ACBL's Bridge Hall of Fame, winner of many national and world championships, and one of the nicest bridge professionals ever.

DAVID ASH
We are saddened to know that David Ash passed away recently. Our condolences go to Linda and to their sons.  David and Linda Ash were active  members of the Fresno Unit. David was honored in 1987 as a member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee. He was also a committee member that worked for several years to plan the North American Bridge Championships that visited Fresno in 1980. When the host hotel, the Del Webb, went out of business shortly before the tournament started, he helped arrange buses for players to come from all over town to the convention center. David was president of the Fresno Unit as well as a Fresno Unit Distinguished Service Award honoree. It must run in the family, as wife Linda and mother Agnes were also so honored.
David also was one of our best players, and one of my regular partners. One of his best efforts was winning the District 22 Grand National Teams at the former Fresno Hilton with Richard Meffley,
John Schnell, and Jim Slinger. They traveled to Denver to play against a Denver team and a Bay Area team. The Bay Area team was vanquished, but unfortunately the Denver team triumphed.
When David and Linda were playing frequently, the Friday and Saturday night bridge games never ended at 10 or 11. They continued on in their living room with more bridge, Oh Hell, and any other game they could think of, sometimes until 3 am or later.
      We will miss David Ash.
